Australia was always a place we wanted to visit when we set off backpacking the world.
It attracted us on so many levels from the great weather, the friendly people and its amazing diversity. One particular place we were eager to explore was the heritage-listed Fraser Island, located on the East Coast of Australia in Queensland. To get there you have to take a boat from either Hervey Bay or Rainbow beach and you have to have a 4WD, as the whole island is covered in sand with no roads.

We had read many fun and exciting stories about all there was to see and do on the remote island and we were not disappointed. Fraser Island has some amazing landmarks and sightseeing places which we visited such as the historic S.S Maheno, that has been shipwrecked on the beached since 1935. We also visited Lake McKenzie, a beautiful lake which is filled with turquoise fresh rainwater featuring pure silica white sand, it felt like walking on clouds.
Perhaps the most memorable and exciting moments were hanging out with other fellow backpackers on a tour from all around the world, camping on Fraser Island and driving a 4WD on the 75-mile beach, through the terrain and rainforest.

We took it in turns driving the 4WD as part of a group and the unique experience of whizzing on the Fraser Island beach smelling the fresh sea breeze will live with us forever. To make things even better we even spotted wild dingoes walking along the beach.
Fraser Island is a place we would recommend anyone to visit and it’s a place which will be forever in our hearts.
